Live long and prosper!

A guide from Sanford electronics on how to keep your appliances living long

We have had so many of our patrons write to us about how their electronic appliances are always giving up on them - the mixer jar just gets a bad fitting, the washing machine bites the dust or something as simple as a hairdryer stops working one fine day.

While most of these catastrophes may have underlying reasons which are mostly out of our reach, like bad voltage or wrong usage, some of the causes can be seasonal or be fixed by regular maintenance. Here, we have put together few simple ways to ensure your home or kitchen appliances last longer.

1. Ensuring long life for your refrigerator
Don't overfill it—this will allow air to move smoothly and save the compressor from having to work overtime. Every few months, clean the compressor coils. Locate the coils in your owner's manual, then vacuum them with a soft-bristle brush attachment. Use a light detergent and water to clean the door gaskets, not bleach. Using dish detergent, water, and a sponge, keep the stainless finish clean.

2.Stovetops and cooking ranges
Place heavy pots and pans carefully on a smooth-top and never move them from one element to another. To guarantee an equal flame on a gas cooktop burner, clear food particles from between the slots in the burner head, and carefully clean a clogged burner ignition port with a needle or straight pin. Use the self-cleaning option or clean the oven manually to keep it free of food buildup.

3.Vacuum cleaner
As needed, replace the vacuum bag and clean the filters. Avoid sucking up sharp or heavy objects, which can clog or damage a vacuum's components, as well as running over the cord, which can fray and cause electric shock. If you use a bagged or bagless vacuum, don't overfill the bag or bin because it makes the machine work harder.

Maintaining appliances in good working order and using them correctly can significantly extend their lifespan. To avoid spending extra money on appliance replacement or repair, you must apply the proper preventative maintenance measures. Keeping all of the components of the appliances you use at home clean and properly handling them will undoubtedly extend their lifespan.
